Research Programmer I

Information Sciences Institute (ISI), a unit of USC's Viterbi School of Engineering, is a world leader in the research and development of advanced information processing, computing, and communications technologies. ISI operates one of the world's largest academic high-performance computing clusters. ISI has three research campuses:  one in Marina Del Rey, CA; one in Arlington, VA; and one in Waltham, MA. This position is located in Marina del Rey, CA. ISI seeks applicants for a research programmer position. A successful candidate for this position will have a degree in Computer Science or a related field and the relevant work experience to provide strong technical knowledge in programming and analysis. Preferred education is a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with demonstrated experience. Experience or coursework in at least two of: artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, information extraction, web crawling and knowledge graphs is required.  Successful applicants to this position will join ISI's Information Integration Group, a large group of around 50 researchers, programmers and students developing technology for discovering and crawling pages and datasets from the Web, for extracting and cleaning information from these sources, for building knowledge graphs using the extracted information, for identifying duplicates and linking information to other sources, for reasoning about confidence, for building predictive models and user interfaces for question answering and visualization. In addition to developing technology, the group also develops applications delivered to customers. Research programmers in the Information Integration group participate in research projects developing technology and using the technology to build applications. They implement state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques in consultation with researchers and they contribute to research designs, develop prototype implementations, run experiments, and participate in the preparation of papers describing the research. Research programmers employ creativity to develop innovative solutions to programming problems encountered in performing cutting edge research. As an academically situated institute, ISI encourages development of and contributions to open source tool kits. Necessary skills include a very strong programming background in Python and expertise in Unix and tools for collaborative software development. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks such as ScikitLearn, and with front end technologies, such as Javascript, React or Polymer are a plus. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
